に vs で: Choosing the Right Japanese Place Particle
Learn when to use に and で for places in Japanese, with clear beginner examples for destinations, locations, and actions.
You are looking at a Japanese sentence and see a place. Should you use に (ni) or で (de)? The quickest way to decide is to look at the verb. If you still need the basic location question どこですか, review the where-is lesson first; this lesson focuses on the particle choice that comes next.
Keep these place words close while you practise: どこ (where), へや (room), えき (station), and がっこう (school).
The short answer
Use に for a place where someone or something exists, or for a destination. Use で for the place where an action happens. The same place can take either particle when the verb changes.
に: a place of existence or a destination
When the verb tells you that a person or thing is located somewhere, に points to that place. に also marks where someone or something is going when the verb is いきます (ikimasu, go).
With に, the useful verb links are あります (there is/are), います (someone or something living is there), and いきます (go).
In both examples, に identifies the place connected to the verb: the room is where someone is, and the station is where someone goes. It does not describe an activity taking place there.
で: the place where an action happens
Use で when a person does something in a place. The action is the important clue: べんきょうします (benkyou shimasu, study) and よみます (yomimasu, read) take a place marked by で.
With で, the place supports an action such as べんきょうします (study), よみます (read), or あそびます (play).
One place, two particles
Now watch what happens to がっこう (gakkou, school). With いきます, it is the destination, so use に. With べんきょうします, it is the place of the action, so use で.
どこに or どこで?
The same decision works with どこ (doko, where). Ask どこに when you want a destination or a place of existence. Ask どこで when you want to know where an action happens.
Answer the first with a destination: えきにいきます (Eki ni ikimasu, I am going to the station). Answer the second with an action place: がっこうでべんきょうします (Gakkou de benkyou shimasu, I study at school).
Common mistakes
❌ がっこうにべんきょうします。 ✅ がっこうでべんきょうします。 The sentence describes studying, so the school is the place of the action.
❌ こうえんでいきます。 ✅ こうえんにいきます。 With いきます, the park is the destination, so use に.
Do not choose by translating に as “in” and で as “at.” English prepositions can overlap; Japanese particle choice follows the meaning of the verb.
Have a go
Choose に or で.
1. えき ___ いきます。
2. へや ___ ほんがあります。
3. がっこう ___ べんきょうします。
4. こうえん ___ あそびます。
Answers: 1. に 2. に 3. で 4. で. Say each completed sentence aloud, then replace one place with a place you know.
One thing to remember
Ask what the verb is doing with the place. Is the place a destination or a location of existence? Choose に. Is it where an action happens? Choose で.
